What are antibiotics for animal agriculture?
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “antimicrobial drugs” are all drugs that work against a variety of microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
Is the use of antibiotics for animal agriculture safe?
Yes. Antibiotics are stringently regulated and judiciously used in the production of animal agriculture. As reviewed and approved by the FDA, the safety assessment is more stringent than that for human antibiotics in three ways:
- If there are unacceptable risks to humans, FDA will not approve the antibiotic for animals.
- FDA requires a food safety assessment to ensure that meat is safe.
- FDA studies the pharmaceutical thoroughly to guarantee it does not increase the risk of antibiotic resistant bacteria in food.
Does antibiotic use in livestock and poultry cause antibiotic resistance in humans?
No. When antibiotics are used in livestock and poultry production, strict withdrawal periods must be followed under the supervision of veterinarians before the animals are processed for foods. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is on site at production facilities to monitor the meat and poultry for any possible residues and will remove product from supply that is not in compliance. What are the consumer benefits to antibiotics in animals?
According to FDA, the use of animal antibiotics helps consumers by:
- Treating or controlling an on-going infectious disease in animals;
- Preventing an infectious disease before an outbreak occurs; or
- Increasing supply by helping the animal gain weight faster and by improving the animal’s ability to convert the food it eats (improved feed efficiency).
Does cooking kill antibiotic resistant microorganisms/bacteria?
