Why is it so important to keep my diabetes under control?
This week's featured question is on the topic of Controlling Diabetes.
Q: Why is it so important to keep my diabetes under control?
Jeff Herr, Doctor of Pharmacy
A: The long term complications of uncontrolled diabetes can be devastating. Blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, loss of extremities and peripheral neuropathy can all result from diabetes if left unchecked. You can even go into a diabetic coma which can lead to death.
Blood sugar checks can range from once daily up to six times or more per day. Your doctor will also periodically check your glycated hemoglobin level which shows your average blood sugar history over a two to three month period.
With a good diet and exercise program coupled with a compliant drug regimen, you can keep your diabetes under control to minimize the sometimes devastating effects of this disease and improve your quality of life.
