There are so many types of medication to treat diabetes. How do I know which medication is right for
This week's featured question is on the topic of Medication for Diabetes.
This week's question was from Larry in San Jose: There are so many types of medication to treat diabetes. How do I know which medication is right for me?
Jeff Herr, Doctor of Pharmacy
A: First off, there are two main types of diabetes. Type I Diabetes which is insulin dependent, and Type II, which is where your body either makes less insulin than needed or your body doesn’t use the insulin properly. If you have type I Diabetes, there are different types of insulin available that offer short or long duration, and quick or delayed release. If you are type II, the same differences exist among oral medicines. The type of medicine that’s right for you will depend on the goal of the therapy and your body’s reaction to the medicine.
The most important aspect of your treatment will be your 100% participation by keeping good records, eating planned meals consistently and keeping good communication with your doctor or pharmacist about the results you are getting.
