Lucky stores in Northern California, owned and operated by Save Mart Supermarkets, are participating in multiple fundraising efforts to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The company co-sponsored the Sierra Hope Ride in June. Stores chain-wide are offering their customers shamrock icons to generate contributions at check stands through August 19, and are participating in the MDA’s Aisles of Smiles product promotion through the end of the month. And employees will volunteer to staff the phones during Jerry Lewis’ annual Labor Day telethon.

Northern California Lucky stores have committed to donate up to $1 Million to local schools through the “Apples for the Students” program. Participating K-12 schools simply need to ask their students’ families, faculty, staff, and community supporters to turn in receipts from these stores to earn points towards computers, school supplies and equipment. The fundraising promotion starts on August 6, 2008 and ends on January 24, 2009.

Northern California Lucky stores have launched a new, simple, secure S.H.A.R.E.S. (Support Humanities, Arts, Recreation, Education, and Sports) points program to boost funding for local schools and organizations. Shoppers simply swipe their S.H.A.R.E.S. cards at the check stand to earn up to 3 cents of every dollar they spend on qualified purchases. This ongoing program will generate up to a total of $2 Million per year in funds for schools and other organizations..

Lucky stores are resuming sales of jalapeño peppers grown, harvested, and packed in the United States, along with products that include these peppers such as salsa. Sales of these foods will resume immediately. The FDA has stated that these jalapeño and serrano peppers were not connected with the recent outbreak of salmonella poisoning in the United States.

Residents of Northern California have the opportunity to support the fire relief efforts of the American Red Cross every time they visit a Lucky store starting tomorrow, Friday, July 11. The stores will collect donations of any amount through the end of this month.

Lucky Supermarket in Sebastopol, California will host book illustrator Stacey Schuett on Saturday, June 21 from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. Ms. Schuett will read Lisa Moser’s Watermelon Wishes, a children’s book she illustrated, as the highlight of the store’s SuperProduce Story Time. The first 50 children attending the reading will receive a free copy of the book, signed by Ms. Schuett..

Save Mart and Lucky Stores have removed from their shelves alfalfa sprouts supplied by Salad Cosmo USA Corp. (Dixon, CA), following a recall initiated by the vendor late yesterday afternoon. During routine USDA testing, several batches were determined to be at risk for contamination with salmonella. To date, no consumers have reported illnesses related to the recalled product.

San Francisco, Calif. -- Save Mart Supermarkets will cut the ribbon on the first of four newly opened Lucky stores this morning. The store, at Sloat Boulevard and Lakeshore Plaza in San Francisco, is the first of four Lucky stores grand opening this morning in the Bay Area. Save Mart Supermarkets announced last week the return of the Lucky name in the Bay Area as it converts the region's 72 Albertsons stores, which Save Mart recently purchased.
